MANET Voice Communicator
MANET Voice Communicator is a short-range handheld radio voice communication device based on mesh network architecture.
August 2026 – May 2027
In active development
MANET technology enables radio networks with random mobile subscribers, implementing fully decentralized control without the need for base stations or backbone nodes. This technology doesn't require licensing; low-power, short-range transmitters operate on frequencies that don't require any permits in most countries.
Such communicators can be used by hikers, search/rescue teams, as well as during natural disasters or military operations when all other communications infrastructure is destroyed or otherwise unavailable.
The project focuses on open hardware and software. We aim to provide complete circuit diagrams, PCB layout drawings, firmware source code, models for 3D-printing the housing, a bill of materials (BOM) for electronic components and instructions for assembling and configuring the communicator. Detailed documentation will ensure high device repairability and so help reduce environmental pollution from electronic component waste.
Our aim is to use only widely available components that are not protected by export restrictions to make sure anyone would be able to build our communicator.
This project was made possible due to generous grant awarded to us by NGI Zero Commons Fund led by NLnet Foundation. We sincerely thank NLnet Foundation for their trust and support!
Hardware schematics, PCB layout Gerber files and BOM are published under CERN Open Hardware License Version 2 - Permissive (CERN-OHL-P-2.0).
Firmware source code will be published under MIT license.
Technical documentation, assembly and operation instructions are published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.
